Welcome

"Learning together....to make a difference!"

Welcome to the website of Little Bowden Primary School. Our site is a new venture and has been built with the support of ‘OpenImage’.

It is hoped that in the future staff and children will be able to develop the website, supported by parents and governors.

Please enjoy exploring the various sections of our site. You can read all the latest newsletters, get up to date information about forthcoming events and hear about the fund raising activities of the PTA. There is also general information about the school curriculum, the history of Little Bowden School (we were 100 years old in October 2007!) and much more.

Should you wish to visit the school, please ring the school office to make an appointment. The headteacher will be delighted to show you around and talk to you about what Little Bowden has to offer and about our vibrant and supportive school community. If you are a prospective parent we hope that this site will give you a flavour of what our school is about, and help you to decide if the school is the right one for your child. If you are a parent with children already at the school, it is hoped that our website will keep you informed about life at the school.

In the future it is planned to develop the site to give parents ideas for supporting your child’s learning at home. Whoever you are, we hope that you enjoy our web site.

Centenary

The school celebrated its 100th birthday in October 2007 and a centenary exhibition was held to mark the occasion.

The school was open to visitors during the week beginning October 1st, with the main exhibition open for viewing on October 6th and 7th.

The school hall was filled with old photographs and memorabliia from the past 100 years of Little Bowden, and we were delighted to see so many people who had been connected to the school in the past. The whole weekend was a great success, with all our visitors reliving happy memories of their time at the school, and renewing old friendships. Here's to the next 100 years!

History

Over the last 100 years Little Bowden school has endeavoured to give all children a broad, balanced and enriching curriculum, through a variety of exciting and challenging activities. We work hard to continue to do this today, giving children learning activities which are appropriate to their needs. As a result we hope that everyone will enjoy their learning and make progress. Many things though, have changed during the school's history. Here is a glimpse at our school in years gone by.

Little Bowden Primary school was officially opened on 8th October 1907. The building was designed by a firm called Coales & Johnson and was built by the local firm of Hickman and Sons. Visitors to the school will note that the main building looks much the same today as it does in one of the earliest photographs we can find shown left.

The picture on the right shows one of the earliest known photographs of staff and pupils believed to have been taken around 1908.

As you can see from the photographs pupils were expected to wear school uniform and it doesn't look anywhere near as comfortable as our modern sweatchirts and fleeces.

Discipline at the school was very strict as you can see from the extracts from the school punishment book shown below. This may be from the infants school which was located on the site before the 'new' school was built in 1907.

The school corridor shown below in this 1910's photo still looks much the same today. However it's use has changed tremendously. Today we use it not only for getting from room to room, but also working 'bays' have been created for staff and children to use. Originally it was used for school meals to be eaten in, as well as a 'marching area' where the children were marched round and round to give them exercise. Thankfully today we have PE.lessons in the school hall.

An early photograph of the school, minus the trees which now dominate this side of the school. (see below).

Sport has always played an important role in the life of the school.

A carnival float from years gone by? In 2007 our centenary float won first prize in the Harborough Carnival parade!
